Join the Irvine Barclay Theatre for the 51st anniversary celebration of America's greatest modern era musical! This Claire Trevor School of the Arts production of West Side Story features Leonard Bernstein's breathtaking score for full orchestra, with thrilling dance numbers and favorite songs including "Maria," "Tonight," "I Feel Pretty," "One Hand, One Heart," "Cool" and "Somewhere." "Something's Coming" indeed, as a pair of star-crossed lovers face the gripping tension between the Jets and the Sharks.       I remember seeing West Side Story, the movie, in 1961 and being caught up in the music, the colors, the dancing and the characters. It happened to me again when I saw the Claire Trevor School of the Arts staging of this magnificent play. I was astounded by the professional quality of the performances, the music and the staging. Where did all these talented young people come from and how can they be this good at such a young age? Maria and Anita were total stand-outs, as were the choreography and the orchestra. I was swept away, just as I had been over 40 years ago. Congratulations to all involved in this professional quality production! Collapse

      This production didn't break any new ground, but it really didn't need to. The music is enough to carry it through. In fact, the book seemed a bit dated to this viewer while the music still felt as fresh as ever. UCI did a great job with the orchestra, though the scenic and lighting designers seemed to be trying too hard and not letting the performers stand on their own. Sometimes less is more. Eli Simon's direction pushed the action down onto the apron and over the orchestra pit which was refreshingly close to the audience, though sometimes the dance numbers felt crowded. Maria was a joy, and the clear stand-out of the performers. Tony was enegagingly likeable, if a bit naive. But in the end, the music of Bernstein and Sondheim, expertly directed, was the real star.
