Written as a ballet score for Martha Graham, Barber's grim depiction of a hideous crime scene nonetheless contains an overriding lyricism. By contrast, Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances displays warmth and passion, color and majesty. Between these two works, Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 shows its revolutionary nature from the very first chords.
