    Saddleback's Jazz Day offers performances by the aspiring and the inspiring, a day-long event leading up to a must-hear appearance by the Saddleback Big Band and soprano saxophonist/composer David Liebman. According to jazz critic Ben Ratliff, "While others of his '60s generation have fallen off their ambition, Liebman has remained dogged about composition and trying different styles." they began playing saxophone by age 12 and his interest in jazz sparked by seeing John Coltrane perform live in New York. Over the past several decades, Liebman has often been featured with top European musicians. Among awards presented to Liebman, most notable are several Grammy nominations, placement in the top three of the Downbeats Critic's Poll since 1973, Honorary Doctorate from the Sibelius Academy (Helsinki, Finland) and the Order of Arts and Letter (France).
