Mahler and Liszt
March 31-April 2, 2011
Berlioz' ode to the sea is sometimes serene, sometimes swashbuckling -- an apt prelude to Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1, which displays both the lyricism and bravura for which he became known. Mahler originally identified with the despairing hero of Jean Paul's novel, "Titan." But the symphony's brilliance and triumphant conclusion so contradicted his earlier emotions he forswore them.
