      John Marr and Norm Weston of Saddleback College performed interesting works by famous and not-so-famous artits. It was a 20th and 21st Century recital featuring their own works plus works by Arvo... Expand

      John Marr and Norm Weston of Saddleback College performed interesting works by famous and not-so-famous artits. It was a 20th and 21st Century recital featuring their own works plus works by Arvo Pärt, David Borden, Doug Westlake and John Adams. It was not a 'typical' concert format. The pianists had the audience sat on stage very near the two grand pianos. After performing each piece, the performers would talk a a little bout the piece, the composer and the circumstances as to how and when the piece was written. Doug Westlake came up and talked about his own piece, "Pounder." This piece included some improvisation. At one point, Norm Weston used his arm to pound on the piano. Not sure if that was how a piano pounder worked, but there surely was a lot of pounding going on in that piece. John Marr's "God rest ye, Mr. Bond" was more than delightful. In this piece, you have the sounds of tranquility and peace intertwined with suspense. Very different, indeed. Collapse
