Dinosaur Jr. and special guests Henry Rollins and Pierced Arrows
December 12, 2011
Segerstrom Center’s Indie Band Series continues to rock this season with Dinosaur Jr. and special guests Henry Rollins and Pierced Arrows on December 12 in Samueli Theater. For its Center debut, Dinosaur Jr. will perform all of the songs from its classic album Bug. Before their set, rocker Henry Rollins will host an interactive Q&A with the band live on stage. A set from Pierced Arrows kicks off the evening at 8:30 p.m.
Dinosaur Jr.’s story in a nutshell: guitarist J Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Patrick “Murph” Murphy meet in Amherst, Massachusetts. The band goes on to rip through the musical landscape and prove to be the genesis of the “alternative rock” archetype. Over the last 25-plus years, Dinosaur Jr. has influenced a countless number of bands, both peers and protégés, by wailing their classic union of melodic bass, seething drums, virtuosic guitar shredding and listless vocal delivery through the iconic Marshall Stack amplifiers.
Henry Rollins was the frontman for the notorious hardcore punk band Black Flag until the rock group’s demise. Following the breakup, he started Rollins Band and has continued to make records and tour the world as both a musician and speaker. He formed 2.13.61, a publishing company that releases books, CDs and DVDs. He won a Grammy® Award for Best Spoken Word Album for the performance of his own book, Get in the Van. He has also hosted numerous radio shows and performed in movies and on television. The Henry Rollins Show airs on the Independent Film Channel and he is a regular guest blogger on Vanity Fair.
Pierced Arrows is a Portland-based trio comprised of Fred and Toody Cole of the seminal punk band Dead Moon and drummer Kelly Halliburton. Known for its fervently rough signature sound, Pierced Arrows’ debut album, Straight from the Heart also draws from raw murky blues and country influences. In 2010, the band followed up with the release of Descending Shadows. According to F. Cole, the album provides fans with “rock ’n’ roll that’s rough, ragged and honest.” Since the late 1960s, the Coles have owned music equipment stores and their own general store in Oregon.
Performances are all-ages; a cash bar will be available for adults 21 years and older with valid ID.
Segerstrom Center’s 2011-2012 Indie Band Series is made possible by the Samueli Foundation. The Center applauds FILTER magazine for its support of this concert.
