Join The Humanities Collective for a screening of 18 short films by artist Richard Newton in conjunction with Laguna Art Museum’s Pacific Standard Time exhibition Best Kept Secret: The Development of Contemporary Art in Southern California, 1964-1971.

    University of California, Irvine
McCormick Screening Room at the Humanities Gateway Building

Richard Newton was born in Oakland, California in 1948. At UC Irvine he received his BA in 1970 and MFA in 1973. He currently lives in Pasadena, California where he continues to work in film and performance. “Almost everything I’ve done,” he says, “has to do with the personal, social context, and political context of my life.”

UC Irvine was a hotbed of creativity and experimentation in the 1960s and early ’70s, a hub of innovation where exceptional teachers such as Tony DeLap, Robert Irwin, and Vija Celmins taught talented students like Alexis Smith, Chris Burden, and Nancy Buchanan. All but forgotten in the intervening years, this exceptional time and place is now recovered at Laguna Art Museum in Best Kept Secret.
