Join the Humanities Collective for a screening of short films by artist Gary Beydler in conjunction with Laguna Art Museum’s Pacific Standard Time exhibition Best Kept Secret: UCI and the Development of Contemporary Art in Southern California, 1964-1971.

Gary Beydler was born in Los Angeles, California in 1944 and enrolled in the UC Irvine MFA program in the early 1970s. Artist Benjamin Lord has said that Beydler’s films “cultivate a radical self-reflexivity that you could trace back to artists like Graham, but he was also interested in landscape: the desert, the freeway, the ocean, and the weather. He’s really quite a romantic, especially in his use of color.” Beydler died in Mission Viejo, California in 2010.

UC Irvine was a hotbed of creativity and experimentation in the 1960s and early ’70s, a hub of innovation where exceptional teachers such as Tony DeLap, Robert Irwin, and Vija Celmins taught talented students like Alexis Smith, Chris Burden, and Nancy Buchanan. All but forgotten in the intervening years, this exceptional time and place is now recovered at Laguna Art Museum in Best Kept Secret.

Film screening is free and open to the public
