    Songs of Bilitis

Presented by at South Coast Repertory - Nicholas Studio

    February 14 - February 17, 2013

    Songs of Bilitis

Part of the "Studio SCR" series, Songs of Bilitis, written by Katie Polebaum and performed by Rogue Artists Ensemble, is the world’s greatest work of counterfeit Greek erotica! At the turn of the 20th-century, Pierre Louys captured the imaginations and libidos of the literary world after penning an extensive collection of exquisite and sensuous poetry by a fabricated Greek courtesan named “Bilities,” and held a false place in the canon of classical Greek erotic literature for nearly 10 years. Combining multi-media projections and video with puppetry, movement and mask work, the Rogues explore how a flamboyant avant-garde Parisian novelist successfully impersonated a Sapphic Greek poet in the most erotically elaborate literary hoax the world has ever known.

Recommendation: Contains nudity and adult language.

Rogue Artists Ensemble is a collective of multi-disciplinary artists who create hyper-theatre, an innovative hybrid of theatre traditions, puppetry, mask work, dance, music and modern technology. Through a collaborative development process, with an emphasis on design and storytelling, Rogue create original, thought-provoking performances. It cultivates unique audience experiences that appeal to multiple generations of theatergoers in order to expand the boundaries of contemporary American theatre.
