Known for exploring Latino Transnational identity and highlighting urban culture and hip hop, playwright and HBO Def Poetry performer Paul S. Flores will venture to Santa Ana to perform his Solo Theater “Mixtape”. Previously, in February of this year, Flores’ play PLACAS: The Most Dangerous Tattoo was presented as a co-production with BOFLTE for the Santa Ana youth and families at South Coast Repertory. The play sparked conversation about the need to understand the realities and obstacles of affected youth and families through the use of the play’s themes including: gangs, incarceration, police conduct, family restoration, and post prison re-entry.
His other plays include solo performance “You’re Gonna Cry” and his most recent production “On The Hill: I AM ALEX NIETO.” Flores’s unique theater performance combines interview based character monologues with bombastic spoken word. San Francisco Weekly named him “Best Politically Active Hip-Hop Performance Artist” and KQED honored him as a “Latino Heritage Local Hero” for his work in theater and youth development. Recently named a 2015 Doris Duke Artist, Flores is a Theater professor at the University of San Francisco.
