Reading in the Redwoods

On April 30th, Glover will lead a group of families along the ENC’s trails and into our redwood forest to share yet another story from his personal list of favorites: McLerran’s children’s book “Roxaboxen.”

In the picture book, illustrated by Barbara Cooney, a group of children realize that a hill of “sand and rocks, some old wooden boxes, cactus and greasewood and thorny ocotillo” can become anything that their imagination wills it to be.

“It’s a book I still read to my daughter. It encourages us to use our imagination in nature,” says Glover.

Spread out a blanket on the forest floor and enjoy McLerran’s tale while gazing up at our collection of towering redwoods. These Pacific Coast tree giants, which can stick around for up to 2,000 years and capture more carbon dioxide than any other tree, are considered by many studies to be part of the answer to climate change.
