“Lost in Translation” showcases works by Belgium-born artist Anja Van Herle and Spanish artist Alberto Murillo
Born in Belgium in 1969, Anja Van Herle combines a European sense of high fashion in her artwork with an American sense of wonder Her childhood years were devoted to exploring the fundamentals of her art using crayons, pencils and watercolors In 1987, she enrolled in Belgium’s Higher Institute for Art Education where she earned a Master’s of Fine Arts in Painting Anja now concentrates on figurative paintings that are inspired by both classic and contemporary fashion while exploring issues of identity, emotion and human interrelationships As timelessly chic as Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Anja’s women are playfully sexy, and their expressions and eyes tell stories that go far beyond the simple exhibition of fine fashion In Anja’s masterful hands, fashion becomes alive “These women—they feel”
“My work is an attempt to capture the complexity of emotions that are conveyed in the human face I’ve been painting portraits since I was a child, continually drawing closer to the face and eyes in order to explore the emotions they contain There’s a story behind every face; my paintings are an attempt to tell these stories by capturing delicate facial expressions and juxtaposing them with vibrant color and the dramatic interplay of shadow and light that both inform my subjects and maintain their enigmatic aura I’m constantly delighted by the various interpretations my work receives For some, a subject may be pensive, while to others it may be seductive or confrontational Part of the viewing experience is for a viewer to attach his or her own emotional meaning to a work,”-Anja Van Herle

Artist Alberto Murillo, born in Madrid, Spain in 1974, says of his work: “This statement is not intended to be a conventional one by any means Maybe it’s the language barrier or it could be I am just not good expressing myself in words Perhaps that’s the main reason I am an Artist, so I could express my point of view in a more visual way My latest collection is titled “Therapy”, because that is literally what my work has been for me for the last several months It has taken me out of the dark After having the most traumatic experience of my life at the end of last year, I felt lost and empty Nothing was making any sense During that incredibly hard time I remained calm, composed and strong That was what my family needed But after coming back to where I now call home, America, the loss and emptiness left its toll on me big time For months I kept having the same nightmare I could not work, or for that matter, function at all The color in my work was gone So, in a way, this new collection has saved me It shows all I had inside and could not express in any other way They are strong, soulful, colorful pieces They are order in chaos They are my most personal work ever, and on top of that I am having the time of my life,” Alberto Murillo

Jovan Karlo Villalba's interest is in the imagination With his work, he attempts to initiate a refreshing experience by stimulating contemplation and escapism in a viewer His painting process combines an array of mark-making and an additive and subtractive layering technique This process enables him to continuously cover and expose the underlying surface – a reflective stainless steel panel – until the desired balance of paint and steel is achieved This balance, mostly determined by form and subject, plays a crucial role as it allows his painted image to coalesce with reflected light and motion The result is work that is in constant flux, navigating between a depicted and a “real” environment
His hope is that the experience of seeing his work will engage his audience and serve as a means for him to effectively comment on present-day social and environmental issues
Jovan Karlo Villalba (b 1977, Quito, Ecuador) was raised in Miami, Florida He is an alumnus of New World School of the Arts in Miami and the Cooper Union School of Art (BFA) in New York City Villalba began to exhibit his work in New York City while working from his art studio located in the Chelsea Art District Over the last decade, Villalba has exhibited his work at galleries and art institutions throughout the United States, including in solo exhibitions in New York City, Los Angeles, and Miami His work has been published worldwide and was recently featured in biennial exhibitions at the Hollywood Art and Culture Center and at the Queens Museum of Art Villalba presently lives and works in Miami, Florida

“Art Crawl Experience” or simply “ACE” is a visually invigorating, tastefully titillating, and an auditory explosive art walk and arts festival that takes place from 6pm to 10pm on the second Saturday of February, May, August and November in what has been acclaimed by local artisans as the Downtown Anaheim Arts District
ACE was created by artists and community leaders with the intent of bringing arts and culture downtown by showcasing art in public places, street artisans, pop-up galleries, and the brick-and-mortar galleries
During the evening of an ACE, attendees stroll amongst outdoor permanent art fixtures, such as Peter Shire’s illuminated birdhouse sculptures, to discover artists demonstrating their creative process live for curious onlookers
The indie craft fair at ACE is a cascade of canopies containing unique hand-crafted treasures Gourmet food trucks rally
Swingin' on the Promenade will be a major attraction during the August ACE, complete with a huge dance floor, a free dance lesson, a live swing band and a beer garden at Lemon Street and Center Street Promenade
Participating downtown eateries and shops transform their spaces into one-night pop-up galleries, while the latest art exhibits are revealed at brick-and-mortar galleries, including Rothick Art Haus, Center Gallery, MUZEO, Joy Art Gallery and Kooi Art
The crawl stretches from Anaheim Blvd, to Harbor Blvd and along Center Street Promenade Art lovers can walk, crawl or climb aboard the Anaheim Resort Transit (ART) for complimentary rides throughout Anaheim’s Art Crawl Experience

James Verbicky never ceases to amaze and is always looking to challenge himself and the viewer As a self-taught artist, James is always experimenting, giving us a peek behind that curtain
"The media paintings bridge the gap between sculpture and painting by binding fragments of vintage media to one another, double-exposing language and image and melting them in upon themselves By unearthing and layering the remnants of dozens of decades of disparate generations, the media paintings transcend simple words and images and become objects containing the essence of human culture" - James Verbicky
Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1973, from Polish descent, James lived the majority of his early life between Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia, however, as an adult he relocated to the US James Verbicky has developed a strong presence in the contemporary art market and was selected for a 110 year-old juried exhibition at the Louvre, in Paris, France with the Societie Nationale des Beaux-Arts
James Verbicky’s work will inspire, provoke, engage and mesmerize

Boxes of Death is an art exhibition where 50 artists are each given their own coffin to do with what they want The idea spawned from Kane Quaye, a famous coffin maker from Africa His philosophy was that a coffin should not just be a pine box, but something that represents the person inside and their life Each artist in the show uses the same coffin canvas format to create their own artistic statement surrounding the preconceived notions and ideas of the coffin shape The people in the show have a chance to step out of their comfort zone and faced with the idea of death, react to it
The result is a visually compelling installation contrasting repetition and individuality Boxes of Death showcases artists from the farthest reaches of the continental US as well as some international artists and highlights an incredibly diverse range of creative backgrounds

The Bowers Museum is pleased to host The Tsars’ Cabinet, which highlights two hundred years of decorative arts under the Romanovs, from the time of Peter the Great in the early eighteenth century to that of Nicholas II in the early twentieth century The objects exhibited provide a rare, intimate glimpse into the everyday lives of the tsars Most of the 160 objects in the exhibition were designed for use by the tsars and members of their families including personal service items commissioned by Catherine the Great and Nicholas II and his wife Alexandra Porcelain services, glassware, enamel, silver gilt, and decorated eggs exemplify the majesty and luxury of the Romanov reign and demonstrate the surfacing tension between historical Russian culture and awareness of the European tradition
The collection brings together a political and social timeline tied to an understanding of Russian culture In viewing The Tsars’ Cabinet, one is transported to a majestic era of progressive politics and dynamic social change

Formerly known as the California Biennial, OCMA has re-envisioned this important survey of contemporary California art and will re-launch it as the California-Pacific Triennial in 2013 with participating artists representing a cross-section of countries from throughout the Pacific rim California’s geographical position on the Pacific Ocean has enriched its cultural prominence The demographics of the state are strongly linked to the diverse countries throughout the Pacific rim, which are increasingly producing some of the most innovative art today Despite the phenomenal economic and cultural growth of Asian and Latin American countries that boarder the Pacific, and California's proximity to these developments, there is no ongoing exhibition on the West Coast that regularly explores this activity With national boundaries becoming more porous and artistic connections happening between artists and viewers from a broad range of cultural backgrounds, the flow of ideas and images crisscrossing the planet becomes a crucial component of any contemporary art survey The California-Pacific Triennial will place artists working in California within this broader global network, one that is particularly relevant to our region, and that will offer visitors their only opportunity to engage in a more cosmopolitan conversation about contemporary art

The fourth show of Laguna Art Museum’s ex·pose series features the last project of Beatriz da Costa, who passed away on December 27, 2012 at age 38 Dying for the Other, a triptych video installation, offers a parallel consideration of mice used in breast cancer research alongside scenes from the artist’s own life Da Costa suffered from breast cancer and underwent intense medical treatment to combat the disease Her installation addresses part of our collective social consciousness—pursuing the advancement of science and medicine, but doing so at the sacrifice of other “less intelligent” beings
Beatriz da Costa was Associate Professor of Studio Art, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Science at the University of California, Irvine Her work as an artist was multidisciplinary, promoting an awareness of the inextricable ways in which active and passive human action affects our environment

In this summer’s main-level exhibition, Laguna Art Museum presents a collection of works by contemporary artists who mimic reality with a playful twist, in the process raising questions of authenticity and duplication Often using off-beat materials, and showing a sly sense of humor, they take as their subject-matter items that anyone might pass over without a second thought, such as food, furniture, or domestic knick-knacks By turning the ordinary into art, they get us to think about how things are made, what they are made from, and how we see them in our everyday experience

Don Pendleton is an American artist whose techniques range from creating digital and hand painted artwork for his legendary body of skateboard graphics to original acrylics on canvas for gallery shows, murals, conceptual art, and installation pieces that merge linguistics with his narrative artistic vision
His aesthetic compositions resonate from linear organic cubist creations and similarly move to more expressionist forms that deal with issues of communication in a narrative, visual context He often incorporates references to insects, animals and ambiguous characters to complete his finished compositions These equivocal Archetypes are in constant interaction competing for space within the linear composition of the painting creating a confluence of tension and issues of communication that is a metaphorical reflection on the state of contemporary society and culture

The indie craft fair at ACE is a cascade of canopies containing unique hand-crafted treasures Gourmet food trucks rally and local entertainers perform throughout the experience

This summer the museum opens a specially-commissioned site-specific installation by Los Angeles-based artist Tanya Aguiñiga Aguiñiga will transform the museum’s upper level gallery into a forest of kelp, corals, barnacles, and other wonderful natural forms that one would typically find under the sea off Laguna Beach Every object in the exhibition will be hand-made by the artist and her assistants using a variety of materials, especially textiles By brilliantly recreating organic elements in unexpected, manmade materials, Aguiñiga enables the viewer to experience them anew In addition to looking, visitors will also be able to explore the exhibition through touching, allowing for a truly immersive encounter

Mission San Juan Capistrano is proud to partner with longtime Mission supporter Mrs Joan Irvine Smith to display reproductions of historic plein-air paintings from her private collection at the Irvine Museum Mrs Smith and the Irvine Museum are committed to conserving the art of plein-air painting and its ability to record history in a unique and beautiful way It is through this parternship that we are able to bring these reroductions of historic landscape paintings to the Soldiers Barracks Gallery at Mission San Juan Capistrano, historic landmark and museum
The Irvine Museum is the only museum in California dedicated entirely to the preservation and display of California Impressionism or Plein-Air paintings, an art style that flourished in California from 1890 to 1930 Mrs Smith and her mother, the late Athalie R Clarke (1903-1993), founded the museum, which is located in the City of Irvine, in central Orange County, in 1992
Madeline Swinden, Founding Chair, Mission Benefit Gala, stated "The art is such great representation of what the mission life was all about the missions were the vanguard of our cities, as most of our major cities were started around the missions and presidios (Spanish forts) in California The missions settled in areas that had good soil, plenty of water and near native American villages, which also are the prerequisites for founding cities"
