Claire Trevor School of the Arts is one of the nation's most acclaimed and innovative centers dedicated to the study of the visual and performing arts. The school is located at the University of California, Irvine. It is named for one of America's distinguished actors and offers degrees in drama, dance, music and studio art, as well as a minor in digital arts.

      Last nights staged reading left the packed Winifred Smith Hall clamoring for more. The creative and bold directing of Mayrona DeLany drove a lyrical and historicaly fascinating tale of 14 women pilots crossing the country in planes. The songs are beautiful, haunting, funny and filled with hope and promise. The acting and vocal talents of the students rivaled the best of Broadway in our own back yard.       I am constantly surprised and delighted with the high quality of shows put on by the Claire Trevor School of the Arts at UC Irvine. This is a showcase for undergraduate students and they do a bang-up job! See it if you can get tickets-- and if you miss this, be sure to catch another. I've never been disappointed by any of the drama, dance or music shows here. Collapse

      Jacque Hairston was there as living history as the arranger of over 25 black spirituals--thus preserving this part of the black heritage in a beautiful way-- and sung by some of the finest I've ever heard. Many of the sopranos of UCI could even easily hit High C sharp. I just happen to enjoy black spirituals and she has done them justice by providing beautiful arrangements to each song. Many of the singers had great theatrical ability conveying some hardships of blacks in particular, but also of the hardships that happen to most of us in general. Collapse

      I saw this play on 3/7/09/. I went with my mother and mother-in-law. The room you are in is rather small, but it was interesting being on the same floor as the performers. Although the costumes were not very good (one mermaid had LA dodgers gloves as fins) they were creative. The story itself was very confusing. Spoilers: Tinker Bell is in love with Hook, Hook is in love with Peter Pan, and Wendy is in love with Peter Pan. I also didn't understand why Wendy would reference Peter as her son and then later call him her father and then try to kiss him. All together it was strange, and we were not the only ones leaving there confused. Some people didn't even come back for the second half. Oh and by the way, if you are not a senior citizen be prepared and dressed to sit on the floor, on a square of carpet. The room was so small that they didn't have enough chairs for the audience.       I remember seeing West Side Story, the movie, in 1961 and being caught up in the music, the colors, the dancing and the characters. It happened to me again when I saw the Claire Trevor School of the Arts staging of this magnificent play. I was astounded by the professional quality of the performances, the music and the staging. Where did all these talented young people come from and how can they be this good at such a young age? Maria and Anita were total stand-outs, as were the choreography and the orchestra. I was swept away, just as I had been over 40 years ago. Congratulations to all involved in this professional quality production! Collapse

      This production didn't break any new ground, but it really didn't need to. The music is enough to carry it through. In fact, the book seemed a bit dated to this viewer while the music still felt as fresh as ever. UCI did a great job with the orchestra, though the scenic and lighting designers seemed to be trying too hard and not letting the performers stand on their own. Sometimes less is more. Eli Simon's direction pushed the action down onto the apron and over the orchestra pit which was refreshingly close to the audience, though sometimes the dance numbers felt crowded. Maria was a joy, and the clear stand-out of the performers. Tony was enegagingly likeable, if a bit naive. But in the end, the music of Bernstein and Sondheim, expertly directed, was the real star.
