 Flagstaff, CA, Unknown

The Flagstaff Arts Council is now accepting applications for art exhibitions in the Jewel Gallery of the Coconino Center for the Arts. Anyone with an exhibition concept can apply, however the Jewel Gallery is a small space (270 sq. ft.) so this opportunity is ideal for solo artist exhibitions. The Arts Council also has availability in the Hidden Light Gallery (204 sq. ft.).

Please read the instructions below carefully to learn the best approach to a successful application.

Who Should Apply

The Jewel Gallery is a small, 270 square foot rectangular exhibition space in the Coconino Center for the Arts. The Center attracts over 30,000 visitors each year; the primary reason for visits to the Center is to view art work in the two galleries. Opening Receptions often attract 200-600 people. Jewel Gallery exhibitions are always aligned chronologically with Main Gallery exhibitions so that the openings are on the same night and audiences are shared.

This opportunity is ideal for an individual artist to show a small body of art work in a solo exhibition. The Jewel Gallery has also successfully hosted small group shows, where each artist is exhibiting a small body of work. Individuals or organizations may apply to guest curate an exhibition. Schools may also apply to host an exhibition during the Youth Art Exhibition in March.

About the Jewel Gallery

This space is approximately 12’ x 22’ with 8+ feet of vertical space. The gallery is lit with LED track lights. Pedestals of various sizes are available. Walls can be painted to suit the exhibition.

Applications for the Jewel Gallery will also be considered for the Hidden Light Gallery, a slightly smaller space (12’x17′) that is off the lobby and near the Jewel Gallery.

The Coconino Center for the Arts is located at 2300 North Fort Valley Road (Highway 180). CCA is on the way to several Arizona attractions such as the Grand Canyon, Museum of Northern Arizona, and the Arizona Snowbowl. The facility includes a 4,000 square foot art Main Gallery and an indoor amphitheater that seats 200.

Application Instructions

Hidden Light Gallery
All applications for exhibitions in the Jewel and Hidden Light Galleries must be submitted online through this website. At the bottom of this page, click on the green “Apply” button to access the application.

Please keep in mind that while the application asks several questions, your proposal does not need to be “polished,” nor does it need to answer all questions. The Arts Advisory Council, which reviews these proposals, views the Jewel Gallery as an opportunity for artists at any career stage to show their work to a sophisticated audience in Northern Arizona. The most important aspects of your application will be the quality of the art work images submitted, and the quality and appropriateness of the exhibition concept.

If you are proposing an exhibition of new art work that has not been created yet, please upload images of art work that are similar in nature to the art work to be exhibited, or that show the historical quality of the participating artist(s).

If you do not have other details prepared that the application asks for, simply answer that question with “to be determined.” This will not hurt your chances of success. Again, it is most important that you provide quality images, a quality description of the exhibition concept, and the types of art work to be shown.

Criteria

A volunteer group of artists and arts professionals, the Arts Advisory Council, reviews all proposals and makes recommendations to Arts Council staff. They consider the following criteria below as their primary guide for decisions. However, other factors may contribute to final decisions.

  • Quality of art work images presented (10 points)
  • Quality of exhibition concept (10 points)
  • Appropriateness of exhibition for the Center and northern Arizona (5 points)
  • Ability of the applicant to complete the exhibition successfully (5 points)
  • Budget and projected costs (2 points)
