San Francisco Symphony with Michael Tilson Thomas

San Francisco Symphony with Michael Tilson Thomas

Presented by Philharmonic Society of Orange County at Unknown

Widely considered to be among the most artistically adventurous and innovative arts institutions in the United States, the San Francisco Symphony makes its first Orange County appearance in nearly 10 years. Led by Michael Tilson Thomas, the program features Mahler’s monumental Fifth Symphony, a work of intense emotions and orchestral range by a composer long championed by Tilson Thomas. Violinist Gil Shaham joins them for Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto.

Appointed Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony in September 1995, Michael Tilson Thomas is currently the longest-tenured music director at any major American orchestra and the longest-tenured San Francisco Symphony Music Director. He made his San Francisco Symphony debut at age 29, leading the orchestra in Mahler’s Symphony No. 9. Since 1996, Tilson Thomas and the orchestra have embarked on more than two dozen national and international tours and made numerous Grammy Award-winning recordings together. Tilson Thomas is a recipient of the National Medal of Arts.
