Award Winning, 2006 - - Connector
"Connector," a 66-foot-tall sculpture, is the centerpiece of the Orange County Performing Arts Center’s pedestrian plaza. Serra’s 360-ton steel artwork, personally commissioned by center founding chairman Henry Segerstrom, took shape in three quick days. It curves, torques and arches upward. Set on a pentagonal ground plan, the burnt sienna sculpture starts with a base 20 feet in diameter, then narrows to a 4-foot opening at its peak. Visitors can experience a unique perspective by walking through two openings in the base of the sculpture. "I hope it will collect people as they cross the plaza, and bring both sides of that plaza together," said the 67-year-old artist.
