• The Value of Public Art

Public art is any work of art or design that is created by an artist specifically to be sited in a public space. It can tower several stories high, or it can call attention to the pavement beneath your feet. It can be cast, carved, built, assembled or painted. Public art has the power to energize our public spaces, arouse our thinking and transform the places where we live, work and play into richer environments that invite interaction. Public art can be a true symbol of a city’s maturity and it can have the power, over time, to transform a city’s image, define a community’s identity or unify a neighborhood.

The Directory begins below with award-winning pieces honored by The Architecture Foundation of Orange County. The Foundation’s Art in Public Places Program is designed to increase awareness regarding the benefits and importance of public art, and to encourage cities, agencies, and developers to include public art in their projects. Awards are determined annually by a jury of five art & design professionals who nominate excellent public art endeavors, ultimately selecting worthy recipients for recognition. For further information regarding the awards or TAFOC, contact James Dockstader, TAFOC Board Member, at (949) 376-9589.
