Artist Call: Car Culture

OCCCA invites artists to drive us crazy with art works exploring our culture’s obsession with cars. The automobile affects all aspects of modern life, where we live, work and play. People are not bashful about their extreme enthusiasm for cars, especially in Southern California where the Finish Fetish trend of highly polished surfaces in art first emerged, influenced by custom cars. Hot rod innovator Ed “Big Daddy” Roth and his bug-eyed mascot Rat Fink are the forerunners of Low Brow art. Several automotive design studios are strategically positioned in Southern California. OCCCA is located in a former Packard automobile showroom, now Orange County’s favorite artist-run alternative space. OCCCA invites creators of paintings, drawings, illustrations, sculptures, photographs, videos, installations, fashion, craft, and even actual vehicles, to exhibit in Car Culture: An Open Call for Art. Start your engines. Pedal to the metal. You’ll be in fast company.

Car Culture: An Open Call for Art pays homage to the hot-rodders and the low-riders, to the pin-stripers and the skate-boarders, to devisers of trick bicycles, to fabricators of custom motorcycles. Car Culture celebrates tail fins, roadside attractions, smog-choked freeways — the good, the bad and the beautiful. Everyone has a car story. Alas, it will be hard to kick the habit of motoring. Car Culture: An Open Call for Art is a madcap elegy for the rapture of the ride. Cars and motorcycles have become icons of our age, seen in famous works by Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha, Chris Burden, Carlos Almaraz, and Robert Williams.
