Violin Instructor - Pacific Symphony Santa Ana Strings Program

   

Working in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Ana, instructor will provide weekly instruction to violin students in grades 2-6 in a classroom format as well as lead the full ensemble during large group rehearsals and performances. Instructor will work closely with Symphony and partner staff to develop and implement curriculum and means of assessment and will apply a wide variety of music related instructional techniques applicable to groups of students of varying musical capabilities.

Key Selection Criteria:
- Must have a string instrument background
- Experience teaching beginning violin students
- Strong background in education and teaching, with significant ability to work with elementary-age students in a group classroom setting
- Comfortable speaking with and establishing the necessary rapport with students/adults
- Comfortable working with a group of students of diverse ages, abilities, and socio-economic backgrounds
- Ability to develop and maintain a class environment conducive to effective learning while still providing an element of fun for the students
- Ability to align instruction with an established curriculum
- Ability to supervise elementary-age students during activities
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability and willingness to work as a team member
- Willingness to adapt teaching style to program’s needs
- Willingness to complete a background check as requested and conducted by school/community site

Duties:
- Work with up to 50 students during full orchestra rehearsal
- Work with up to 30 students during regular class time
- Develop and implement class lessons, activities and games that teach and reinforce the curriculum, rhythmic and musical literacy, and additional music education topics
- Foster a sense of community where students feel safe, enjoy the process of learning music, and can develop self-esteem and responsibility
- In communication with the SAS Manager, will be asked for input on student performance in regard to the current pace of the curriculum
- Identify students who might be in need of additional support
- Assist in determining appropriate level grouping of students
- May be asked by the SAS Manager for curriculum input
- Focus on large class management and music education
- Need to communicate regularly to facilitate class and lesson plan structure
- May be asked to lead the students in large group rehearsals and/or performances
- Work closely with the SAS Manager for classroom or instructional material needs
- Possess a collaborative spirit and the ability to work as part of a team
