A Hot Time In Old Orange County Tonight: Santa Ana’s Firefighting History

This guided historical tour of Fairhaven Memorial Park and Santa Ana Cemetery features costumed actors portraying historic figures who share stories from Orange County’s past.

            From the earliest volunteers of the 1800s to the 21^st century’s skilled professionals, Santa Ana’s fire department served and protected the community with honor.  You’ll hear the story of the courage of beloved fire horses, Deck and Dan, and their final sacrifice in WWI.  Meet Fire Chief W.C. Young and his wife Christena who will end the controversy over the true motivation behind the 1906 burning of Santa Ana’s Chinatown.  By all accounts, Firefighter Wayne “Foamy” Gross was quite a character, and you’ll hear about pranks involving the California Highway Patrol and the wealthy Irvine family, to name a few.  Listen to famous Marx Brother, Harpo, as he spins a wild tale of disguises, mishaps and a secret 1936 wedding in an Orange County firehouse, while his wife Susan sets the record straight on what really happened.

            Visitors will want to allow extra time before or after their tour to view a unique collection of vintage fire trucks and equipment (including vehicles from the 1890s to the 1930s) and shop for treasures at the gift and boutique booths.

Docents will guide visitors through scenes that showcase the history of the county’s early firefighters, culminating in a presentation in Fairhaven’s beautiful 1916 mausoleum. Small groups, a lovely outdoor setting, and close access to the actors make the tour an entertaining outing for the whole family.  Comfortable shoes and a hat or sunshade are recommended for the hour-and-a-half long walking tour.

The event is presented by the Santa Ana Historical Preservation Society and will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fairhaven Memorial Park, 1702 Fairhaven Ave., Santa Ana.
