Art of the Folding Fan

The hand-held fans have a history that goes back more than 2,000 years, as both a practical and decorative art object. In both Asia and Europe, folding fans expressed both propriety and power in ceremony as well as courtship. We invited more than 100 artists of diverse styles to paint their own fans for a contemporary look at this ancient art form.
