Community Youth Orchestra of Southern California Concerto Competition

The Community Youth Orchestra of Southern California (CYOSC) Concerto competition is open to all school-age students. Students should perform one movement of a concerto (double concertos etc also welcome ), or similar solo piece. The level of the piece should be Suzuki bk 4 and above. Students will be judged on their musicality, technical proficiency, interpretation, and overall level of preparedness. The overall winner will play as a soloist with CYOSC Symphony Orchestra at the Finale Concert on May 19th, 2024. Around 10 runners-up will be selected to play at the Concerto Concert on February 24th, 2024 accompanied by a chamber orchestra.

The first round will be held on January 19th and 26th, and will be judged by a panel of professionals. Each participant will receive a written assessment from the panel. Performers should arrange their own accompanist. While having an accompanist is not required, it is recommended. Performers should prepare to play no more than 5 mins of their solo for the first round.

The winner of this festival will (if the music allows) perform their concerto movement accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra at the season finale concert in May. If it is not possible to perform the concerto (e.g., orchestral music not available), the winner can choose another piece.
