Doing 40 Dances connects different UC Irvine communities in a special performance event, using imagination and creativity to bring people together–students, faculty, staff, and visiting scholars from several different departments, children, elders, and everybody in between. In 1964 Jackson Mac Low (1922-2004), a friend and colleague of John Cage, created “The Pronouns: A Collection of 40 Dances for the Dancers,” poems that were also instructions for performance, for his friends in the New York City avant-garde arts community. His daughter Clarinda Mac Low collaborates with over 35 people from the UCI community to bring these historically significant poems to life in a humorous, playful, engaging, and absolutely unique performance where everybody brings their own special voice to the table. With a performance by dance legend Simone Forti, on Friday night only.
