ENGINEERING & DESIGN WORKSHOPS at Child Creativity Lab

Have you ever wanted to dream up new inventions and figure out how to turn them into reality? Children will work in teams with our collaborative maker challenges, design and make personalized and memorable robot creations, study aerodynamics with our wind tunnel, and more, all while enhancing skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, and innovation.

The Workshops

Popping the Creativity Can – Sponsored by Faber-Castell, the children will experience an educational and fun project designing and creating personalized art pieces made from an array of open-ended craft materials, including googly eyes, feathers, pipe cleaners, felt pom poms, popsicle sticks, scissors, various fabrics, and more.

Collaborative STEM Challenge – Children will be paired up and challenged to work together to address a STEM-based challenge by designing a solution using only reclaimed and reusable materials.

CCL Wind Tunnel Challenge – Using a variety of reclaimed and reusable materials, children learn about the science of aerodynamics and create their own personalized high-flying inventions that will be tested in our portable wind tunnel.

Fun with PlasTikobots – Each child can design and create their own personalized art pieces, called PlasTikobots, made from reclaimed single-use plastics.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Claudio Garzón, an LA-based artist, cherishes the waterways around his home. He walks along the L.A. River nearly every day and collects things that catch his eye. But he’s not picking up colorful rocks or interesting shells—he’s picking up plastic garbage. Claudio is an ocean advocate working to inspire students and the public to conserve our changing oceans. His plastic ocean debris sculptures offer a unique way to represent and convey this global crisis. His work exemplifies not only visionary creativity, but exciting solution-oriented design to encourage environmental awareness. Claudio believes artists are the storytellers needed to translate massive amounts of scientific data in ways that can be assimilated and acted upon by the public who are simply not getting the message needed to be informed and engaged. His art work has been featured in The Los Angeles Times, Discovery Channel, Discovery Channel En Español, National Geographic and TEDxSoCal.
