Inaugurated in 2018, the second edition of the LISTEN TO THE MOTION features the motion sensor system MUGIC™, which captures the movements of a performer’s expressive gestures. The concert presents students from the Integrated Composition, Improvisation, and Technology (ICIT) program in the Claire Trevor School of the Arts (CTSA), who have been working with MUGIC™ with Professor Mari Kimura. Prof. Kimura has been researching the use of motion sensors in performance and composition, to enable integrated human/machine relationship that could extend and create a new form of expressiveness. Since Prof. Kimura joined UCI in 2017, the MUGIC™ project has been supported by the Multi Disciplinary Program (MDP) program at the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) at UCI, where her team has been developing a new prototype of MUGIC™.
