The Irvine Fine Arts Center is offering a virtual workshop series for visual artists. This two-part series led by artist, writer, and independent curator Virginia Broersma, will cover the fundamentals that emerging visual artists need to know in order to present themselves professionally and competitively for career-expanding opportunities.

Both workshops are free and participants do NOT need to be residents of Irvine or Orange County.

Session One: Getting Ready for Opportunity
Thursday, June 18, 10:30am – 12pm 

This workshop will cover the four essentials that artists should prepare in advance of applying for exhibition opportunities: their CV/Resume, Artist Biography, Artist Statement, and images of their work. These four elements are standard when applying to open call opportunities, and are often asked for by curators and exhibition spaces when considering developing a professional relationship with a new artist.

In this presentation, artist Virginia Broersma will cover each of these components including what the basic expectations are, pitfalls to avoid, and tips and resources for getting these materials together. Broersma will explain what purpose each component serves, and how you can shape them for particular opportunities.

Part 2: Finding Opportunities
Thursday, June 25, 10:30am – 12pm

Many artists are unaware of the opportunities they can pursue to share and fund their artwork. Knowing how to look for these opportunities and determine what could be of value at any stage in your career is a significant component of being proactive in your art practice.

In this presentation, artist Virginia Broersma will be discussing different types of artist opportunities such as grants, juried shows, residencies and more. Examples will be provided to highlight what artists should look for in assessing the value of each opportunity.

Led by Virginia Broersma:
Virginia Broersma is a Los Angeles based artist living in Long Beach. She has exhibited extensively in Los Angeles as well as across the United States and internationally in Japan, Germany, Finland, and Italy. She has been the recipient of several grants including the Arts Council for Long Beach; the California Institute of Contemporary Arts; the Puffin Foundation; and the City of Chicago’s Community Arts Assistance Program Grant. In 2016 she was jointly selected for the Emerging Curators Program at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE). From 2019-2020, Broersma wrote a column for the Long Beach Post’s Art and Culture site and has written essays for several exhibition catalogs.

In 2019, Broersma launched The Artist’s Office to support artists professional growth through sharing of tools, resources, and knowledge as well as administrative support for the non-studio based work of being an artist.
