HB APA Presents Play 'Antigone'

The very first theatric production ever put on by the Academy for the Performing Arts, and one of the masterpieces of the modern French stage, Antigone, is being revived on its 20th anniversary.

“Antigone is young. She would much rather live than die. But there is no help for it. When your name is Antigone, there is only one part you can play; and she will have to play hers through to the end.” Jean Anouilh’s Antigone is an adaptation of Sophocles’ tragic play of the same title. Written in 1942, when Nazi forces occupied France, the story revolves around the conflict between the idealist Antigone and her rigid uncle, Creon, over the proper burial of Antigone’s brother, Polynices. The play was also interpreted to represent the struggle of the French Resistance movement against the forces of the Vichy government during the height of Nazi occupation.

This revival show will be performed in the intimate setting of the APA Studio Theater located behind the HBUHSD auditorium on the HBHS campus.
