Henry Louis Gates, Jr., host of PBS’ “Finding Your Roots,” is a highly visible and immensely popular social scientist whose research into genealogy and genetics continues to provide greater understanding of individual history and greater appreciation of cultural diversity. Professor Gates, who directs Harvard University’s Hutchins Center for African and African American Research, is a literary scholar, journalist, and author of 17 books as well as an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker with 14 documentaries to his credit. He is a leading cultural critic and a formidable intellectual force on multicultural and African American issues.
