Virtual Exhibition of L@s Raramuris/Tarahumaras.  

As of July 1, 2020 – Gallery visits are temporarily suspended in accordance with new guidelines issued for indoor museums.  Our outdoor sculpture garden is open.

In 1972 Oscar Castillo photographed the Tarahumara long distance runners in the high Sierras of Chihuahua, Mexico.  Until 2019, only a few images saw publication and lay unprinted for 40 years.  Castillo is best known for capturing L.A.’s Chicano Moratorium on film to preserve a moment in time for a traditional society’s struggle to preserve a way of life in a changing world.

L@s Raramuris/Tarahumaras is a photographic exploration of the Raramuris and Tarahumara peoples renowned for their long distance running ability.  They are a migrant culture, often dwelling in natural shelter found in Mexico’s Copper Canyon, where some of you visited on a Muck trip about seven years ago.
