Madame Butterfly and LOOC's Return to the Opera Gala

Based on the short story written by John Luther Long, Madame Butterfly takes place at the turn 20th century near Nagasaki, Japan. American naval officer, Lieutenant B.F. Pinkerton, takes on a 999-year lease and arranges through a marriage broker to marry Cio-Cio San, a young geisha known as Madame Butterfly. Aware of the lax nature of Japanese divorce laws, Pinkerton does not have long-term intentions with Butterfly although she falls in love with him. After the wedding, Pinkerton is called back to America and for years, Butterfly waits for him to return to Japan. When Pinkerton returns to Nagasaki, Butterfly learns that he has brought along with him a new wife. Devastated, Butterfly takes her own life.
