Celebrating the International Year of Czech Music
The Prague Philharmonic Choir is a first-class vocal ensemble and one of the most renowned representatives of Czech music worldwide. The choir performs with leading Czech and foreign orchestras and world-famous conductors; it is a regular guest at prestigious music festivals, and records for major international labels. It is much sought after as an outstanding interpreter of not only Dvo?ák’s oratorios, Janá?ek’s operas, vocal compositions by Beethoven and Mahler but also of operatic works by Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner. The choir has retained its characteristic sound and highly valued professionalism for nearly eighty years of its existence.
The choir was established in 1935 by the singer and choirmaster Jan Kühn as an ensemble of the Czechoslovak Radio. Originally it was supposed to serve the needs of radio broadcasting but it soon acquitted itself as a reliable partner of Prague orchestras and became an essential part of the Czech music scene. What was originally an amateur body gradually developed into a professional choir and in 1953 it was integrated into the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Today, the Prague Philharmonic Choir is an independent music entity and is led by a talented young choirmaster, Lukáš Vasilek. It is a flexible vocal ensemble and its repertoire is very broad, ranging from late baroque to contemporary music, including cantatas, oratorios, symphonic and operatic works.
