Representations of the Virgin of Guadalupe in Colonial Mexico

Presented by Lisa Sousa, Professor of History, Occidental College. The Virgin of Guadalupe is the patron saint of Mexico, and her image is iconic in Mexican and Chicano art. This presentation focuses of the origins and developments of the devotion to Guadalupe in colonial Mexico. Special attention is given to the incorporation of indigenous and Spanish elements in the apparition account and miracle stories, and colonial representations of the Virgin in paintings and woodcuts.
