The postwar period was a time of recovery and rebuilding and a time of hope. After a phase of inspiration and flow of artistic ideas, the art world settled into a conservative mood called the “return to order.” The spring lecture series examines the artist’s answer to a new century marked by terrible war and the final years of the classic avant-garde in Germany, France, the United States, the Netherlands, and Italy.
