The Assembly 07 | 'RECESS: An Improvisation Structure for Sound and Movement'

Be immersed in The Assembly’s evening-length improvisation structure for sound and movement on September 21, 2017 at Costa Mesa’s 10,000 sq. ft. Westside Museum. Scored by Long Beach choreographers Megan Guise and Jobel Medina in collaboration with musicians Zaq Kenefick and Jeff Livingstone, the performance marks the company’s seventh season to date. Five additional OC- and LA-based dancers will make decisions as the evening unfolds, giving audience members a closer look at the innate spontaneity, possibility and eloquence of contemporary dance. Audience members can choose whether to view the performance from the ground floor or mezzanine, and can partake of small plates and drinks sold by The Boathouse Collective. Artwork and merchandise will be available for purchase care of visual artist Kristen Morabito, costume collaborator Dustë Goods, and The Assembly.

‘RECESS’ strives not to take itself too seriously: the work has been conceived as a playground, with set rules and separate sections giving it structure but not predetermined form. The prompt to relax and have fun has been extended to the group’s dance artists and collaborators, and, ultimately, will be requested of audience members as well. The Assembly creates unique events that appeal equally to dance-lovers and people who’ve never experienced concert dance.
