The Legacy Project: El Toro, Memory, and the Creative Process

 Jacques Garnier, preeminent photographer and co-founder of The Legacy Project, has been documenting the former El Toro Marine base since 2002. With five like-minded artists, he has created the world's largest photograph by converting an F-18 hanger into the largest pinhole camera ever constructed. While the base transitioned from abandonment to being re-purposed as a housing development and park, Garnier focused his work on the role of memory and its importance in conceptualizing the past. Garnier's The Great Picture, the largest photograph ever made, is on display at the Smithsonian Institution through November 2014. Presented in partnership with the Council on Aging.
