Uncle Vanya

In his adaptation Brian Friel presents a fresh version of the 1899 Russian play…a century old drama with a contemporary plea for mercy and grace. Uncle Vanya has managed the estate of a professor for many years, and now the older relative is thinking about selling the estate, an unsettling prospect for the rest of the family who regard the estate as their home. Uncle Vanya is also falling in love with the old professor’s new and lovely young wife, while Vanya’s daughter yearns for the old man’s visiting doctor, who is also looking longingly at the professor’s wife. A bittersweet play of real people caught in the thrall of events and feelings beyond their control.
