The Southern California Plein Air Painters Association, founded in January 2000, was first known as “The Friday Group”. The original group of painters met in Jeff Horn’s landscape-painting course at Irvine Valley College in August of 1999. At the end of the course, they decided to continue to meet weekly and paint the landscape in and around Orange County. In January of 2001 the group had grown to over 50 painters and required some formal organization. In February of the same year, the group formally became known as the Southern California Plein Air Painters Association, representing the locale of the membership. An elected board of directors including a President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and Events Chairperson, guides the Association. The association’s membership is made up of beginning art students, leisure-time painters, and professional artists. Many of the members’ works are represented in numerous galleries in Southern California. All are dedicated to celebrating the landscape. The current membership is over 300, as of December 2009.

The premier group show was held in June of 2001 at the Debra Huse Gallery on Balboa Island. The 2002 member show was held in March at the Robert Mondavi Food and Wine Center in Costa Mesa. There were over 300 invitation only attendees to celebrate opening night.

Today SOCALPAPA members enjoy potluck meetings every other month and an annual spouses and friends night as well as a Christmas event that was added in 2001. ... view more »
