Heroes Hall is an admission-free, permanent, year-round museum with exhibitions, performances and educational programs that celebrate the legacy of Orange County veterans and others who have served our nation. The two-story exhibition space rotates themes semi-annually with each focusing on an aspect of the personal stories and experiences of veterans.

Housed in a newly renovated 1942 Santa Ana Army Air Base barracks building, Heroes Hall consists of 3,600 square feet of exhibition space as well as the Medal of Honor Plaza and Walk of Honor which feature 5,000 square feet of space conducive for events and larger gatherings.

The Heroes Hall Curriculum Developer will research, write and format content and coordinate a program for the K-12 education outreach of the museum. Curriculum development efforts will culminate in the content for:

  • Pre-visit teacher package with HH website support and brochure (approx. 25 hrs.)
  • Student pre-visit guide on HH website (approx. 30 hrs.)
  • Student workbook for onsite visit (approx. 40 hrs.)
  • Post-tour feedback and evaluation (approx. 25 hrs.)

Particular emphasis will be placed on:

  • Using The Santa Ana Army Airbase Story exhibition as a launching point to explore 11th grade Common Core curriculum as it pertains to:
    • The study of WW II and the roles and sacrifices of individual American soldiers, as well as the unique contributions of the special fighting forces (e.g., the Tuskegee Airmen, the 442nd Regimental Combat team, the Navajo Code Talkers, etc. )
    • Major developments in aviation, weaponry, communication and medicine and the war’s impact on the location of American industry and use of resources.
  • Secondary emphasis will be placed on:
    • Flag etiquette: Proper care and use of the American flag (approx. 15 hrs.)
    • Medal of Honor exploration: What is a hero? Who is a hero? (approx. 15 hrs.)
    • Medal of Honor history and symbology (approx. 15 hrs.)
    • Table of Dignity: The history and contributions of agricultural workers in California (approx. 15 hrs.)
    • Heroes Hall and Centennial Farm as they relate to California’s two biggest industries: Farming and aerospace (approx. 25 hrs.)

11th grade estimated total hours: Not to exceed 120
Additional components hours: Not to exceed 85

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five years of teaching experience, preferably U.S. or World History
  • Knowledge and experience in developing curriculum based on Common Core State Standards
  • Museum education experience preferred
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Strong research skills
  • Excellent time management
  • Must provide a writing sample to consist of a similar past project that you have developed
  • Two (2) letters of references

Hourly rate: $35
11th grade curriculum completion date: No later than October 30, 2017
Additional components completion date: No later than November 17, 2017

Logistics: Meetings with Heroes Hall and OCFEC staff as required at OCFEC. Vast majority of work by contractors will be done offsite.
