The City of Tustin Public Arts Committee has initiated a public art project to beautify the city and enhance the life of its citizens. The current project(s) are 26 concrete planters of various shapes and sizes intended to enhance the pedestrian walkway and storefronts of the Old Town Tustin area. The total cost per completed planter box shall not exceed $300, including artist’s materials. An artist may not complete more than five (5) planters, unless consent is expressed in writing by the Public Arts Committee.

Project Description: The Old Town Planter Public Art Project medium will be acrylic paint. The use of color and imagery, literal and abstract, which enhances and inspires Old Town Tustin as a destination experience, will be given preference. All proposals to be considered should reflect the local citrus/agricultural heritage of Tustin or the military history at the former Tustin Marine Corps Air Station. Proposals may also consider current Old Town Tustin scenes or images that reflect the history of Old Town Tustin or Tustin iconic events. Images of parks located within the city of Tustin and other creative themes and designs are also acceptable.

Artists must submit a resume, images of their previous work, and a color rendering of the proposed planter box(s) design and palette. The process to select and award an artist(s) project will include a review and evaluation of proposals by the City of Tustin Public Arts Committee comprised of community members appointed by the City Council. Final approval will be made by the Tustin City Council. The selected artist will be required to sign a liability release and a project agreement which will include a provision waiving the artist’s rights of ownership of the finished art project. The completed project shall be the sole property of the City of Tustin.
