Educational Trunks

Program description

Wonders of Asia: A look at Asia through the eyes of five Asian cultures. This program consists of 2 trunks containing curriculum, reproducible materials, hands-on Asian artifacts, books and activities to teach children about the immigration of the Asian cultures to the United States. The Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Hmong and Indian cultures will be explored by studying their versions of the Cinderella fairytale, New Year’s celebrations, and the preparation of cultural foods.

Stories of Long Ago: Included with the Hands On English Scholarship Program is the free rental of the Stories of Long Ago outreach trunk. The trunk and curriculum guide are designed to use fairy tales and nursery rhymes to meet the English Language Arts (ELA) and English Language Development (ELD) standards for kindergarten and first grade children. The trunk contains carefully selected literature that will give children the opportunity to enjoy rich vocabulary as they explore and discover the fantasies and truths of classic stories of long ago. Throughout the teacher-directed activities and independent choices, children will practice reading, writing, listening and speaking. It consists of a collapsible puppet theatre, a complementary curriculum guide with activities, carefully selected literature, puppets, costumes and props.

The First Californians: This program consists of 1 large trunk and 1 duffel bag containing curriculum, reproducible materials, hands-on Native Californian artifacts, books, audio-visual media and activities that complement 4th grade state standards in history, social studies, music, art and literacy.

Rainforest Envirokit: This program consists of 2 trunks and a duffel bag containing curriculum, reproducible materials, activity kits and supplies, books, CD-ROMS’s, audio-visual media, props and costumes that teach a variety of standards-based science themes as students build their own classroom rainforest.

Kinder Science Kits: Based on the life science standards, these kits are designed to combine science and literacy in a hands-on manner. The kits are full of books and complementary activities that make students want to do science, and a complete curriculum guide to help teachers get the most out of the science kits. Kids include: "The Farm" for Kindergartners, "The Wild" for 1st graders, and "Life Cycles in the Rain Forest" for 2nd graders.
