Learning requires discipline and our weekly art classes encourages artists to develop at a steady pace from which they can build on. Observational Drawing Class

Program description

Observational Drawing Class – All levels are welcome

This class focuses on the development of basic observational skills and drawing techniques, such as line, shape, contour, light and shade, introduction in perspective, and tonal drawing. Students will develop both drawing technical abilities and comprehension of drawing material and subject matter through life drawing and image imitation.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Observe and accurately render three-dimensional forms on a two-dimensional surface by the use of line, value, and texture.
  2. Utilize a variety of lines and mark-making in drawing. Interpret the structure of forms using cross contour, and planar construction drawing.
  3. Create drawings that demonstrate the basic principles of empirical/ observational perspective.
  4. Accurately describe forms and space through gradations of value.
  5. Utilize and apply a range of dry drawing materials and techniques, including graphite and charcoal.

Supply List:

  • 1 pad of DRAWING paper, 18” x 24” Strathmore 400 or equivalent
  • 12” x 9 Sketchbook (Strathmore or equivalent) White or toned(tan)
  • * 1 Drawing board with clips – large enough to hold 18” x 24” paper (23×26 tote board)
  • * Kneaded eraser and regular rubber eraser
  • * Graphite Pencils: HB, 2B and 4B
  • Charcoal Pencils HB and 4B
  • Soft Vine charcoal, 1 pack minimum
  • 1 Sandpaper pad or Medium (#100) sandpaper to sharpen drawing tools
  • 1 Safety knife (X-acto knife)

NOTE: The supplies that show an asterisk (*) are required on the first class meeting.

Cancellation Policy

In the case of absences students with a 4 class tuition will receive a makeup; 10 class tuition will receive two makeups.
