Santa Ana: We Are Cloths

Santa Ana: We Are Cloths

Presented by Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) and Bowers Museum at Bowers Museum

Santa Ana Unifies School District (SAUSD) is pleased to present a unique student exhibit, "We Are Our Cloths" on exhibit at the Bowers Museum's Historic Courtyard Annex.

Artist Statement from Exhibiting Students of Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School:

We are third and fourth graders from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, here in the city of Santa Ana. We had the pleasure of visiting the Bowers Museum to learn about the ÀdÌrẹ cloths from the Yoruba people of Nigeria. In making this artwork, we learned that these indigo-dyed cotton cloths were traditionally made and worn by women throughout the Yoruba region of south-western Nigeria, West Africa. We enjoyed making different patterns and decorating our projects. It made us think of the way different cultures, such as the Mexican culture, create art in the way they decorate their clothing. It’s a way of expressing ideas and emotions. We hope you enjoy how we expressed ours.

This program is presented with funding provided by Specified General Fund for the Museum Grant Program under the California Cultural and Historical Endowment.  This exhibiti.on is presented in partnership with Santa Ana Unified School District
