Presented by Bowers Museum at Bowers Museum

Presented by Kristin Mihaylovich, Professor of Art History at Fullerton College.

Early Encounters: Spanish and French Colonization

This week’s lecture will examine the early encounters between indigenous Americans and the Spanish and French colonial powers. We’ll look at how paintings and engravings helped form the European perspective on Native American culture. We’ll explore the contrasting aesthetics between indigenous and European artists and their emerging synthesis. Lastly, we’ll discuss how art assisted in the process of converting native groups to Catholicism and how these legacies endure today.
