Art in Context: Visions in American Art History (Part 2 of 6)

Presented by Bowers Museum at Bowers Museum

Presented by Kristin Mihaylovich, Professor of Art History at Fullerton College.

Here, we’ll look at artist John White and some of the earliest watercolors and engravings representing indigenous life in North America. In contrast, we’ll explore Native American artworks and their subsequent inclusion in European collections. We’ll discuss the 1619 arrival of enslaved persons from Africa and the artistic contributions of Harriet Powers, Dave Drake, Joshua Johnston and others who helped form a colonial identity.
