Erté Exhibition

Erté Exhibition

at South Coast Plaza

The Martin Lawrence Galleries South Coast is having an exhibition on artworks by Erté, the Father of Art Deco.

Erté—Romain de Tirtoff – was born in Russia in 1892, worked as an art designer, and passed away in 1990. Erté’s designs influenced theatre, film, fashion, and an art movement known as, “Art Deco.” In 1912, Erté moved to Paris where his talent was recognized by the city’s most established couturiers.  In 1915, he began designing the cover of Harpers Bazar for the next 22 years. Erté created original costume and fashion designs for renowned screen actresses including Joan Crawford, Lillian Gish, and Marion Davies. He designed stage productions at venues such as New York’s Radio City Music Hall, the Casino de Paris, and the Folies-Bergère. At the age of 75, Erté gave rebirth to Art Deco with recreations of his former designs in bronze and serigraphy. His works are in international permanent collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian Institution, and Victoria & Albert Museum.
