at Irvine Heritage Park Library

OC Public Libraries cordially invites you to join us on Tuesday, May 9th at the Irvine Heritage Park Library at 6:30 pm, to meet bestselling author Julia Alvarez of “In the Time of the Butterflies.”

“In the Time of the Butterflies” is based on the powerful true events of the Mirabal sisters, four Dominican women who opposed the dictatorship of Trujillo and created a movement to resist his power. In November of 1960, three of the sisters were found near their wrecked Jeep in the Dominican Republic. Through the art and magic of Julia Alvarez’s imagination, the martyred Butterflies live again in this novel of courage, love, and the human cost of political oppression.

Alvarez was born in New York and raised in the Dominican Republic, she is a poet, fiction writer, essayist and author of world renowned books including “How the García Girls Lost their Accents” and “Something to Declare.”
