Canadian photographer Jack Burman’s collection of large-scale photographs documenting preserved people, specimens, skeletons, and medical abnormalities.
Canadian photographer Jack Burman has created a collection of photographs that document preserved people, specimens, skeletons and medical abnormalities. Raised in Toronto, Burman studied English literature at the University of Toronto before beginning his career as a photographer. Inspired by Peter Hujar’s Portraits in Life and Death and early photographs of Sicilian catacombs, he found the subject matter for which he is best known. Burman has spent decades photographing the dead in medical and anatomy laboratories and catacombs throughout Europe, North and South America and beyond. This exhibition will feature twenty-one large-scale photographs previously documented in Burman’s rare books, The Dead: Vol. I & Vol. II.
