Barry Flanagan is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and founder of the acclaimed world music group HAPA. In 1980, Flanagan moved to Hawaii to research and study the art of Kiho ‘Alu, or slack key guitar, and Haku Mele, Hawaiian language song composing.
Founded in 1983 by Barry Flanagan and Keli’i Kaneali’i, HAPA was proclaimed “Hawaii’s hottest group” by Billboard magazine. Over the years, many changes have taken place within the ensemble. But now, HAPA returns to the Southland where Flanagan will be joined by Keli’i to recreate the Original Hapa. Also appearing will be special guest Lehua Kalima of Na Leo Pilimehana. A recipient of over 20 Na Hoku Hanohano awards with group Na Leo, Kalima has also won an unprecedented three individual awards as a songwriter.
