Orange County’s critically acclaimed contemporary dance company Backhausdance launches its 16th season November 2 and 3 with a program of world premieres and company favorites at the Martha B. Knoebel Dance Theater in Long Beach.
The program will feature two signature works, “Hive” and “The Margin,” by Backhausdance Artistic Director Jennifer Backhaus that emphasize the company's ensemble aesthetic and lush movement vocabulary. The company will also perform two world premieres by internationally renowned guest choreographers Mauro Astolfi of Italy and Jhonathan Soutchy of Israel.
“Hive” premiered at Irvine Barclay Theatre in 2017. Choreographed by Jennifer Backhaus, “Hive” is a percussive and intricate repertory piece for the full company with a complex series of interactions. The unfolding and dissolving relationships are musically driven and create a strong, viscous group dynamic. Music is “White Man Sleeps” by Kevin Volans, performed by Kronos Quartet.
“The Margin” has its premiere at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in 2012. Choreographed by Jennifer Backhaus, the “Margin” action takes place on and around a four foot by four foot wood platform. In this excerpt, four dancers interact in playful and mesmerizing ways as they vie to hold their ground. Music is Steve Reich, Howie B & Coldcut Remixes.
Tickets are $60 for premium seats, $40 for adults and $20 for students.
