A menudo existe un estigma al hablar sobre la trata de personas. Son muchos los líderes sociales y las comunidades que se resisten a reconocer los índices estadísticos del tráfico en los Estados Unidos. Esta serie fotográfica de Cecilia Lopez, artista de la ciudad de Santa Ana, dirige su atención a este tema como un esfuerzo para provocar el diálogo y generar conciencia sobre las experiencias de aquellos que carecen de voz en nuestra sociedad.

Para su exposición individual en Grand Central Art Center, la artista ha creado fotografías de gran formato en blanco y negro montadas en cajas luminosas; imágenes que son una muestra de la fascinación de la artista por las sombras desprovistas de características definidas. Inspirada por el trabajo de la fotógrafa Diane Arbus, una artista que prestó su voz a individuos marginalizados por la sociedad, Lopez crea una metáfora para aquellos que viven a la sombra de la trata de personas –los marginalizados del presente.

There is often a stigma when talking about human trafficking. There are many social leaders and communities that refuse to recognize the statistical indexes of trafficking in the United States. This photographic series by Cecilia Lopez, artist from the city of Santa Ana, directs her attention to this topic as an effort to provoke dialogue and generate awareness about the experiences of those who lack voice in our society.

For her solo exhibition at Grand Central Art Center, the artist has created large-format black and white photographs mounted in luminous boxes; images that are a sample of the fascination of the artist by the shadows devoid of defined characteristics. Inspired by the work of photographer Diane Arbus, an artist who lent her voice to individuals marginalized by society, Lopez creates a metaphor for those who live in the shadow of human trafficking - the marginalized of the present.

In the words of the artist: "Shadows are seen as a reflection of the individual when in reality they are his identity. They are viewed with contempt because they are not recognizable and lack explicit human characteristics. Like shadows, human trafficking is also constantly misinterpreted due to what it physically involves, sex; it is represented as an act performed by the victim, instead of being seen as sexual exploitation and a criminal act against the individual. "
